Buckie Shipyards signs catamaran deal

Staff, Windpower Monthly, 12 December 2011, 2:43pm

UK: A Scottish boatbuilder has formed an alliance with a South African yard and New Zealand designer to build new catamaran wind-farm service vessels.

Buckie Shipyards, based on the Moray Firth, has entered an agreement with Veecraft Marine of Cape Town, South Africa, to be the UK builder of the Teknicraft boat, an aluminium-hulled catamaran.

Veecraft holds the UK marketing rights for the vessel. The hydrofoil-assisted fast cat uses a design developed in New Zealand by Teknicraft.

The vessel will carry 12 passengers with a cruising speed of 27 knots and a sprint speed of up to 35 knots. It is based on a vessel built for the New Zealand Police and was showcased at the EWEA Offshore event in Amsterdam last month.
