RWE begins Gwynt y Mor construction

UK: RWE is beginning construction of its 576MW Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm off the North Wales coast.

The project, which will use Siemens turbines, will become the second biggest offshore wind farm in the world. The biggest will be the 1GW London Array.

Last year, RWE signed a to build an offshore facility at the Port of Mostyn, north Wales, as part of its plan to develop the project.

It also signed a three-year £5 million contract with Cammell Laird Shipyard to provide port and quayside facilties, and to load and fit out the foundations of the offshore wind turbines.

Gwynt y Mor is owned by RWE Innogy (60%), Stadtwerke München (30%) and Siemens (10%). It is expected to start producing electricity by 2013. Overall completion is set for 2014.
