CHINA: Guodian United Power's (GUP) production line has completed its first 6MW offshore wind turbine.

GUP said it based the 6MW turbine on its existing 1.5MW, 2MW and 3MW turbines. The 6MW turbine features an outer gear-ring yaw bearing, a large double-row tapered main bearing, and short main bearing, to reduce the weight of the turbine.

The turbine has a control system with independent pitch-control function to effectively reduce the uneven load of big MW-level turbines. It has low voltage ride-through capacity.

In addition to offshore wind farms, GUP says the turbine is suitable for onshore wind farms and intertidal wind farms under diversified wind resources.

The 6MW turbine is 95 metres high from the wheel hub to the ground. The main engine room weighs 230 tons. Each blade is 66.5-metres long, making the rotor swept area 14,519 square metres.

It is the second Chinese manufacturer to develop a 6MW turbine. In May, Sinovel rolled out a 6MW prototype, and in October installed it 6MW in Sheyang county, Jiangsu Province.
