Samsung to test offshore turbine in Scotland

John McKenna, Windpower Monthly, 31 January 2012, 4:01pm

UK: Korean engineering giant Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) today confirmed it would use Scotland as its base to test its 7MW offshore wind turbine.

SHI will test its 7MW turbine at the Fife Energy Park in Methil, joining firms such as the Netherlands’ 2-B Energy in using the dockside development as an offshore turbine testing facility.

In addition to the Energy Park announcement, Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond also confirmed today that SHI had signed a multimillion pound deal with local firm David Brown Gear Systems to supply gearbox systems for its next generation offshore wind turbine.

David Brown intends to co-locate a gearbox assembly plant to supply the SHI facility at Methil.
