Key features on the 'Vestas Weather' app include tailored reports to user-selected locations, a 5-day forecast updated every six hours and a feature that calculates in real-time how much energy a V122 3MW wind turbine would generate if installed at your current location.

The project was developed by Vestas Technology’s R&D division and uses both global databases and the sensors on the company’s turbines around the world. The forecast models are run and maintained by meteorologists at Vestas Plant Siting and Forecasting.

The app is only available for the iPhone, iTouch and iPad. However, versions for the Android and Windows Mobile operating systems are in the pipeline.

Speaking about the decision to launch the project and give the app away for free, Lars Chr. Christensen, VP, Plant Siting and Forecasting, Vestas Technology R&D said: "It’s pretty simple. We have so much knowledge that we can share with the broader public in a way that supports our product and our brand.

"This app gives extremely useful information for the end-user and at the same time we can promote wind."
