In the early days of wind turbine development it was recognised that large wind turbines would be needed if the electricity generated was to match the output of fossil-fired power stations. Many of the early government-funded programmes, therefore, concentrated on building wind turbines with rotors up to 100 metres in diameter and with 4MW output.
